It couldn't NOT change at that point, but it was hard, it was traumatic and I became like the goo a caterpillar goes into. As with most years, there were good and bad things, but while I tend to focus on the negative too easily I want to focus on all the good things we did this last year!

why.

In 2017 we have had several fairy tale project themes! The first was in the spring (and I am only now putting up the pictures) and it was all "Beauty and the Beast"!!!

I have shared before about the books we have used and projects we have done and so forth, but this blog post is more about how you could bring a theme or specific interest that your child has all together to build a full curriculum based on that. My child's special interest is rabbits-- how can that be enough to cover all the subjects? I don't like reading blog posts about them either! It is made from packing paper from an amazon box and taped and thumb tacked to the wall.

onto the leaves for most of our poetry tea times.

You can do a poetry tea time ANY way you want! You could do a picnic poetry time, or go to starbucks, or not have tea but have some other favorite snacks instead.

We have always loved read aloud books! My favorite part of doing school is reading aloud to my kids and back in the day, that was almost entirely picture books of course. At some point when my oldest was about 8 I started reading other choices like the "Little House on the Prairie" series, and all the Narnia books. Too often, people think that academic learning and school should be hard. Like if it isn't hard and tedious then they aren't actually learning. Yet, in reality we should work to the level of success!
We should find every day life and interests to enjoy together.
Tie books to movies to games to art to field trips.

I bought gift boxes from the dollar store (the smaller ones were in a multiple set for a dollar!) so that I'd have 24 total boxes that I could fill with books and crafts and such! My 10 year old (resistant reader/writer) wrote a story for this contest! I played editor as any professional writer would have and now her story is on Youtube with some others as well! I made a couple coloring pages for my own kids and their friends for thanksgiving just now! And hopefully it will be easy for anyone to copy/save the pictures from here and print them out for your own kids. I shared briefly in the previous post about this pocket journal, but it was brand new and I hadn't gotten a chance to use it yet! It has a different feel than some of the others so is worth some extra attention.
My 8 year old thought it looked amazing and she wanted to use it right away, but I personally think it would work best for possibly 6th grade and higher or for a child who loves to Lynne'http://www.blogger.com/profile/02472779340527849300noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21114887.post-46544100654019644282016-10-20T16:22:00.001-05:002016-10-24T18:10:20.225-05:00Thinking Tree books in Categories! We have loved using the Thinking Tree books for over a year now (and longer if you include the Dyslexia Games books that we have used on and off for about 3 years too! Which started back when I was learning about Right Brain dominant learners.)

We have been doing "Poetry teatimes" for long enough now that we have started writing our own poetry at the end almost every time! It might be silly or short or not that great, but still it is fun and a great creative time.

I started our new school year a few weeks ago, feathering in the subjects and routines slowly so we could get back into the swing of learning in a more regular way.
